"Communities, Disaster & Change" is a traveling exhibition coordinated by the Valdez Museum and Historical Archive, in Valdez, Alaska. It provides a twist on the fiftieth anniversary of the Good Friday Earthquake commemoration through its connection with other communities and other disasters. The exhibit will travel around the state as well as to Oregon, and Hawaii. The full travel schedule and complete online gallery of the exhibit can be seen here.

This blog serves as a place to host a global conversation about the indomitable nature of the human spirit and communities' reactions to change, how they survive disaster and how they rebuild for the future. We hope this can be a tool for people like you, all across the world, to reach out and share your stories on survival and the will to carry on.

If you have seen the exhibit whether online or in person we want to know your reaction to the work of these twenty-eight Alaskan artists. Please join us in an ongoing conversation, and chime in with your thoughts, views and your personal stories of your community, disaster, and change.

"Communities, Disaster & Change" Is Now At The Pratt Museum In Homer

On Monday, September 15, the Pratt Museum in Homer received a shipment of five crates from the Valdez Museum and Historical Archive. Over the next several days, they were each carefully unpacked and their contents inspected. What was inside? Twenty-nine diverse and profound art works, comprising the traveling exhibition, Communities, Disaster and Change.

Taking over the majority of the Pratt’s lower level galleries, Communities, Disaster and Change is an impressive collection of art, all created in response to disasters like the Good Friday Earthquake. The works shown represent a veritable “who’s who” of contemporary Alaskan artists.

Of the twenty-eight invited artists who contributed to the show, seven reside along the shores of Kachemak Bay. Shown below are Asia Freeman, Maygen Janetta, Ron Senungetuk and Kathy Smith. Additional regional artists include Annette Bellamy, Jim Miller, and Marjorie Scholl.

The Pratt’s opening reception on Friday, September 19, was well-attended and warmly received. Many thanks to the Valdez Museum and Historical Archive for organizing the exhibit, curators Patricia Wolfe and Georgia Blue, all of the participating artists, and the generous funders who have made the exhibition and tour possible: The Western States Arts Federation, National Endowment for the Arts, City of Valdez, Rasmuson Foundation through the Harper Arts Touring Fund, Alaska State Council on the Arts, Alyeska Pipeline Service Company, and the City of Homer.

Communities, Disaster and Change will remain at the Pratt Museum through October 18.
